Tom and Jerry Banned From Smoking
Monday August 21, 2006
According to Reuters, cartoon characters in Tom and Jerry, the Flintstones, and other Hanna-Barbera cartoons can no longer smoke glamorous cigars on the Boomerang television channel in the U.K. Since the smoking ban is retroactive, vintage historic episodes made over 40 years ago will be edited as now considered appropriate. The action was taken as the result of a viewer's complaint to Ofcom, the British media regulator. Unfortunately, I expect the censors in the U.S. and other countries to soon take similar action.
