One Less Cigar Show on TV

By June 7, 2007

Follow me on:

If you don't plan on watching LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavs try to annihilate the San Antonio Spurs on ABC this Sunday night (June 10, 2007) at 9:00PM ET, you just may want to tune in to the final episode of The Sopranos on HBO. In today's world of indoor and outdoor smoking bans, movies getting 'R' ratings because of smoking (even James Bond cannot smoke cigars anymore), and smoking scenes being edited out of vintage cartoons, television shows where cigar smoking is tolerated are destined to become things of the past. We may still have ABC's Boston Legal on Tuesday nights at 10:00PM ET (not on June 12 when the Cavs preempt the show just to lose game No. 3), but outside of the internet and websites like cigars.about.com, the only mainstream cigar media of any consequence are a few magazines such as Cigar and Cigar Aficionado, and possibly the Cigar Dave nationally syndicated radio program. I was hoping that someone would eventually make a major movie with a cigar theme, and not just using cigars as props, which would be similar to the way the movie Sideways utilized wine connoisseurs to tell another kind of story. Since that will probably never happen, I may just have to record The Sopranos on Sunday night, and watch it after the Cavs play the Spurs, while sucking on a trademark CAO Sopranos cigar.

As an occasional cigar smoker, I don’t really watch much TV. I don’t want my children to be influenced by what they see on TV either. When my kids are old enough to ask me about cigars, I will tell them the good and the bad of it and let them make their own decisions based on what they learn. In the meantime, I’d rather see a good TV show on superheroes or sports and not care if my local bar is going to allow smoking or not or if my favorite Tom and Jerry cartoons will ever be aired with smoking. They’re too violent. I smoke on my deck or in my car. Sometimes at a gig. That’s about it.

What ever would Red Auerbach do?
Coincidence with smoking bans and the decline of the Celtics?

Maybe not mainstream but Jerry over at The Stogie Review (http://www.stogiereview.com) is pretty entertaining in his video cigar reviews.

I agree with “What About”. Maybe it’s time for Jerry to go mainstream?
