Thursday July 19, 2007
Today, the Senate Finance Committee approved a massive increase in the federal excise tax on cigars and cigarettes to fund an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (Read more here - pdf file). The full Senate must still approve the measure, and President Bush has threatened to veto the legislation if passed by the U.S. Congress. We encourage all cigar smokers to email your Senators and express your opposition to this legislation TODAY!

Hey You! You smoke Cigars? Then e-mail your senator! Its easy and only a few clicks away. You can even cut and paste what I sent to my 2 senators:
Dear Sen. ______,
I wanted to let you know of my opposition to the proposed expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) being considered by the Senate Finance Committee. I understand that the proposed legislation would include an incredible tax increase on cigars.
The cigar market is significantly different from the cigarette industry; this proposed increase would have devastating effects on consumers, as well as virtually every manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer.
Also, such there could be severe effects on the economies of Nicaragua, Honduras, The Dominican Republic and have a significant impact on Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Panama, Brasil, and Peru.
I wanted to communicate my opposition to such legislation, and ask that you do whatever you can to prevent this proposal becoming law.
Thank you,
