Cigar Tax Update
Wednesday July 25, 2007
The proposed cap of $10 in federal excise tax that could be added to the purchase price of a large cigar has been lowered. Legislation to increase the current cap of five cents to one dollar per cigar will be considered on Thursday, July 26, by the U.S. House Committee on Ways & Means. Further revisions are still possible, as the legislation to fund the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007 works its way through Congress. If approved, the higher taxes would take effect on January 1, 2008.

Thanks for the update, Gary. I made calls to the two US Senators from my state. I hope everyone else is doing the same. The cigar community has to get more organized and vocal. I was encouraged by the leadership finally shown by the vendors this time. I just hope it is not too little, too late.
