News Briefs About Cigars
Friday October 12, 2007
- There is always news coming from CAO Cigars. Their new "America" cigar was rated 90 in the October 9 edition of Cigar Insider, the bi-monthly newsletter published by Cigar Aficionado magazine. I will also be reviewing this cigar in the near future, which has already been added to our list of Top Cigars for American Holidays. Also in regards to CAO, congratulations to Frank Kapp on his promotion to the position of National Sales Manager at CAO Cigars. Kapp, 38, joined CAO in 2004 as Regional Sales Manager in the mid-Atlantic territory.
- I do not enjoy writing about smoking bans, especially those overly restrictive bans being adopted in small localities by small time politicians looking for national headlines. Therefore, in my attempt to reverse the trend of making unnamed small town politicians famous just for wanting to have the most restrictive smoking ban, suffice it to say that one unnamed small town in California passed a law to restrict smoking in private residences, unless that residence is a freestanding structure. In other words, if you live in a condo or apartment with common walls, forget about smoking in your own place. Enough said.
- General Cigar's trademark to market the Cohiba brand of cigars in the U.S. was upheld, once again. Counterfeit cigars that infringe on the trademarks of famous brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo, and others are an ongoing problem, and the owners of those trademarks continue to fight vigorously to protect their brand names.
- Last but certainly not least, we anxiously await the vote scheduled for next week in Congress to override the President's veto of the SCHIP legislation, which would hike the federal excise tax on cigars by 6,000%. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
