Your Cigar Rights
Sunday June 8, 2008
A new organization has just been formed by a group of cigar makers and retailers to help defend the cigar industry against higher cigar taxes and smoking bans, and they want you to join them in the cause. The idea sounds noble, as long as the monies collected from your annual membership fees are used to obtain results that cannot otherwise be obtained by existing cigar organizations such as the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (formerly RTDA) and the Cigar Association of America. For example, when the SCHIP legislation originally threatened to raise the federal excise tax on cigars by 20,000%, both aforementioned cigar associations sprung into action and rallied cigar smokers to help quash the proposal.
To help sell the concept of this new organization, known as Cigar Rights of America, the website cigarrights.org was launched, and a group of some of its founding members will be visiting various cities across the country on a CRA Freedom Tour. Check it out and decide for yourself if you want to contribute $35 per year to help the fight against higher cigar taxes and smoking bans.

while i am all for joining cigarrights.org, it should be noted that right now their signup form IS NOT SECURE! Means data transmitted is not encrypted! I strongly advise to never submit credit card details unsecured over the web. so until they change that, i would suggest to better wait.
just sayin’
Alex brings up a good point. My further question would be - what other uses will be made of this voter/address database? Will it be sold to marketing companies, used for election-period junk mail? I don’t have problems supporting this particular cause, but given what we have seen over the last couple of years about improperly secured customer databases and the problems that occur when the escape into the wild, I’m concerned about what might happen.
