New List of Top 5 Cigars for Beginners

Wednesday August 20, 2008
Now that we have updated the navigation and appearance of this website, it is time to update some of our most popular features, such as our list of Top 5 Cigars for Beginners. The original list consisted mostly of cigars that I enjoyed as a new cigar smoker many years ago, but our new list consists of the best mild-to-medium cigars available on the market today, which are most appropriate for new cigar smokers. Experienced cigar smokers will enjoy these, too. So whomever you are, make sure to check out our brand new list of the Top 5 Cigars for Beginners.

Interesting list. There are a couple on there that I have not tried. I think a beginner should stick with a mild cigar. You can never go wrong with a Fuente.

First, I consider some of these cigars too spicy for beginners. Where’s the Dominican Republic recommendation?

Anyhow, here’s some thoughts: CAO — a decent choice, but perhaps not #1. Macanudo — I wouldn’t list this on the top 5 (maybe top 10), since ‘top-selling’ rarely equates to quality (eg, Bud Light). Gispert — get this off the list. Torano — a perfect recommendation, since I absolutely LOVE everything the Torano family produces, especially their 1959 Exodus series (perhaps too strong for beginners). Helix — get this off the list, too much marketing hype.

I gotta agree with Paul, you really need to recommend an Arturo Afuente here. Plus, where’s the Romeo y Juliete and/or Punch recommendation? Both brands are easy to find, are relatively inexpensive, and most beginners usually appreciate one of these mild smokes. A Montesino, Padron, or Montecristo might also be a good recommendation (for a price).

Again, just some thoughts.

Great opinions. We’re glad that you agree with at least some of the cigars on our revised list. There are many cigars that could be on this list, and a couple that you have recommended were on our previous Top 5 list. Macanudo is now on the list partly because of its popularity. A beginner needs some experience, and Mac is a great cigar to use as a benchmark to compare and evaluate other cigars. Both Macanudo and Helix do contain some Dominican filler tobacco in the blend. We would have liked to include Te Amo’s Dominican Blend (in their World Selection Series) on the list, but those cigars are not yet widely available. We respect and thank you for your comments, and we will tweak this list more often in the future.
