Third Hand Cigar Smoke?

By February 10, 2010

Follow me on:

Is third-hand smoke yet another contrived reason for governments to ban cigarette and cigar smoking everywhere? I first heard about third hand smoke just last night on the evening news, but the term was actually "invented" about a year ago. Everybody has heard about second hand smoke, but third-hand smoke is apparently the lingering smell left behind on clothes, furniture, etc. long after the smoke has cleared the room. You can read more about it at examiner.com and post your own thoughts and comments, below.

Last night Styx Lounge was at a private function. It represented 150 oil and gas people. They had no idea we where going to be there. By the end of the night we had about 65 of the 150 stop in and have a cigar, relaxed in our mobile cigar lounge with 4 TV’s, stereo, air filtration and surround sound. For 5 hours, all I heard was wow it’s so nice to be able to sit down inside and have a great cigar. Iím glad to be a cigar smoker and doing my part to continue this great enjoyment of life. So if you ever in Houston look us up.

So this is what Al Gore has been up to being that the global warming scam is falling apart. How come these claims don’t come with the data about the “test”? Sure, you dunk someone in a vat of residue it would probably be bad.

I am skeptical of this as well. Cigars aren’t processed with nearly the same amount of chemicals that cigarettes are. The link had little data as Henry mentioned above and decided to dig some up. The two articles with the best info are (the Examiner is a lousy resource of anything and why they decided to focus on cigars, who knows):

Scientific American: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=what-is-third-hand-smoke

And from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html?_r=1

To me all this means if you have kids, smoke outside and have a smoking sweatshirt. If you have a backyard, you can get a smoking tent for pretty cheap during the winter if you can designate a smoking room.

While an avid cigar smoker myself, I do try to be respectful of the people around me as any smoker would. I have seen some cigar smokers make us look for-the-worse by telling women with children and other people to to take a hike in an outdoor situation. If we act like jerks to the general public, we’re just asking for the bans and taxes, imo because if it ever comes to a vote people will remember the inconsiderate smokers at the booths, not the ones who were gentlemen.

Re Jon’s comments: The pages that you link to at the Scientific American and the NY Times go to articles that are over a year old, which were written about the first study done on third-hand smoke. The Examiner’s article is about the second study, which was recently published.

Here is what I posted on that site:
How many LIES are they going try on us. Third Hand smoke? What a JOKE people are not at a risk from Second Hand smoke let alone Third if thats the case then what about second hand smoke from Grilled Chicken cooked of a hot flame, or Third Hand smoke(Health Dept says it has as much carcinogens as a pack of cigarettes) ? I keep saying this if people are concerned about cigarette smoke WHY do they keep letting the Cigarette Companies make Cigarettes with 60% Chemicals and stale tobacco, stems, and Paper(mixed in with the tobacco). Besides it NOT the Nicotine thats additive but the Chemicals added that IS : Modern Marvels:Tobacco. These Anti-smoke people are UN-American its one thing to have some places smoke free but they want the WORLD to be smoke free and we have the right to smoke and it is a LIE about Second Hand Smoke. Another Lie is Pipe and Cigars ARE SAFER then Cigarettes because [the real ones not drug store swisher sweets]are not made with any of the chemicals found in cigarettes and are NOT additive.
