Ambos Mundos Robusto Cigar

Ambos Mundos (meaning Both Worlds) are modestly priced cigars made for Pete Johnson with a slightly lower grade of tobacco than his Tatuaje brand. But these are not really inferior cigars, and are made with a blend of quality long filler tobaccos from Nicaragua. The cigars are available with either a Nicaraguan Habano or Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, and are produced in two sizes (Toro and Robusto). I sampled a Robusto (5 x 50) with a Nicaraguan wrapper, which has a cream colored band. The Sumatra wrapper is identified by a red band.

Flavor

I wasn't expecting much from a cigar made with a lower grade of tobacco, but I was pleasantly surprised. However, I must say that the Ambos Mundos Robusto that I smoked for this review was sitting in my humidor for over a year, which most likely improved the quality of the cigar. Anyway, the cigar was medium bodied, and started off with moderate cedar flavor with a hint of spice. During the first 10 minutes, the cigar had a slightly dry aftertaste, which then disappeared. The cigar was good enough at the start, but then improved and maintained its enjoyable flavor throughout the remainder of the smoke.

Draw and Construction

The Ambos Mundos Robusto was well made and had a good draw and a relatively even burn. No relights nor touch ups were required, and the cigar held a medium-to-long ash. It took me 40 minutes to smoke the cigar down to only 1½ inches remaining, and it was good to the last puff.

Value

The price of Ambos Mundos Robustos are around $5 per cigar, which is a good value in today's market. However, if the taste that you experience is not as good as what I described, chances are the cigars need to sit in your humidor for at least several months. Aging does not improve bad cigars, but some value-priced cigars cost less only because the cigar/tobacco was not aged long enough. In most cases, aging your cigars will greatly improve their flavor and “smokeability”.
