Reason For
We are all aware that the world has changed after September 11, 2001. More security is now required at airports and other transportation hubs to prevent terrorism. If restricting torch lighters on airplanes increases the safety of the flying public, then this is a small price to pay to save lives.
Arguments Against
Besides the inconvenience to cigar smokers, the former requirement of having TSO's search for trivial items such as
cigar cutters resulted in long lines at the airport, and higher ticket prices for the flying public. Was this really necessary to fight terrorism? The new regulations are more relaxed with respect to
cigar cutters, but can be confusing in regards to lighters, for both the flying public and the screeners, as well.
Resolution
If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter or any other items are prohibited, do not bring them to the airport. Use wooden matches at your destination, or purchase a cheap disposable lighter. If your lighter also contains your
cutter, you may want to purchase a cheap guillotine
cutter for those times when you travel by plane.
