La Paloma cigars are Thompson exclusives made in the Dominican Republic, and they come in several varieties. This is a review of the La Paloma Vintage Reserva Maduro Torpedo, which measures 7 inches in length with a ring gauge
of 54. The cigar is made with a tasty Bahia Brazilian Maduro wrapper
The Vintage Reserva Maduro was medium-to-full flavored and at least medium in strength, if not medium-to-full. According to Thompson, this cigar is listed as being mild-to-medium in strength. Regardless, the smoke was not overpowering, and the flavor was very enjoyable. I have read many cigar reviews over the years describing a chocolate flavor in a cigar, but I have seldom experienced a similar taste myself. In addition to a rich tobacco flavor, I actually tasted something that I can only describe as being chocolate-like while smoking the La Paloma. The taste was mildly sweet for the first couple of inches, and then began fading to a slightly sweet but still chocolate-like taste. Those flavors lasted all the way down to the last two inches of the cigar.
Draw and Construction
The cigar was well made, had an even burn, a flaky ash, a nice draw, and did not require any relights or touchup lights. The cigar lasted for about an hour, and I enjoyed it all the way down to two inches remaining without any construction issues to hamper my enjoyment of this cigar.
At a cost of $62 for a box of 25 cigars, for an average price of about $2.50 per stick, the La Paloma Vintage Reserva is a pretty good value in a cigar, albeit a Thompson exclusive. Although many house brands, private labels, and exclusives are usually value priced, they can make for some very good bargains compared to national brands, depending on your particular tastes. If you do not want to take a chance on buying an entire box, look for a Thompson sampler pack that includes this cigar. If you are an experienced cigar smoker and are not looking for a mild cigar more suited for a beginner, I don't think that you will be disappointed with La Paloma Vintage Reserva Maduro Torpedo cigars.
