La Flor Dominicana Ligero cigars are made by Litto Gomez in the Dominican Republic with ligero
filler and
binder tobaccos grown in the Dominican Republic, and dark Ecuadorian sun grown
wrappers. Ligero tobacco leaves come from the top part of the tobacco plant, which receive the most sunlight, which enhances their strength. The Robusto
size has a length of 5 ¾ inches, and is available in your choice of three different
ring gauges. I selected the largest size having a ring gauge of 60 for this review, named the Robusto L500.
Flavor
As might be expected from a cigar made with ligero tobacco, the flavor of the L500 Robusto was on the fuller side, but not at all overpowering. In fact, I would have to call this a medium-to-full bodied cigar when compared to other high-powered sticks. So, in other words, don't be intimidated by the term "Ligero". The cigar began with a blast of flavor that tasted spicy and peppery, with a hint of sweetness. As the burn progressed, the flavor became more subtle and mellow, but not less complex, making for a most enjoyable smoking experience. The taste never became bitter or harsh, but at one point about two inches down the cigar, I thought that I detected a brief hint of salt.Draw and Construction
The cigar was well made, had a great draw, and did not require any relights. However, a couple of touch-up lights were required to keep the burn even. The cigar held a long firm ash, and it took just over an hour to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining.Value
For lovers of fuller bodied cigars that are not overpowering, the cost of about $134 for a box of 24 cigars is not unreasonable. That works out to about $5.60 per stick when purchased by the box, but if purchased as singles, the price will be a bit higher. The Robusto is also available in two other sizes, which are less expensive. For example, the L300 has the same length of 5 ¾ inches, but a ring gauge of 50. The price is just under $5 per cigar when purchased by the box. This is a decent value for a handmade cigar containing premium ligero tobaccos. These cigars are recommended for experienced cigar smokers, but are a bit too strong for most beginners.
