In 1883 Papa Azul Martinez left Cuba for the Dominican Republic and brought with him Cuban tobacco seeds. For over 100 years in the Dominican Republic, the Garcia Martinez family have grown some of the industry's most respected tobaccos. La Diferencia Cubana is made with aged tobaccos - a blend of San Vicente Seco, San Vicente Ligero, Piloto Dominicano Seco, and broadleaf
filler tobaccos; an Olor Dominicano
binder; and a Nicaraguan sun-grown
wrapper.
Flavor, Aroma, Draw & Construction
I just put all this together this time so I could talk about all aspects together.
This cigar that was made by Hendrik Kelner, one of the Davidoff cigar makers, is in my opinion a mild to medium smoke. The cigar is a little soft to the touch and the wrapper is medium brown and is somewhat rough looking with large visible veins. The binder is Dominican Olor tobacco and the filler is a long leaf blend of the tobaccos mentioned above seco, ligero and piloto. These are Spanish terms which mean; seco dry, ligero light, and piloto pilot. Piloto in this case is the term used to describe the seeds brought from Cuba as the pilot or first plants to begin the cultivation of a new crop of tobacco grown in another country other than Cuba. The word olor in Spanish comes from the verb oler which means to smell. In direct translation olor is the scent of something and in the case of tobacco leaves they are leaves that have a good scent, when picked fresh, after aging and drying, and when they are smoked in the cigar. The Dominican Olor tobacco is true to its name and has an excellent aroma. The draw is very easy and the flavor is woodsy with a hint of leather. The cigar smoked for about one hour without any relights and it burned very even. I must also add that both my wife and her dad (a pipe smoker) commented on how nice this cigars aroma was.Value
This is a great value and great smoking cigar for the novice and for the seasoned smoker that enjoys a lighter cigar. It is a little reminiscent of a Montecristo No. 2. These cigars can be found online for as low as $39 for a box of 20, and could end up on our
Best cigars for under $2 list, if they are still available (may be discontinued). Better get 'em while they're hot!
